Abstract

This document examines the career of Valentín Trujillo, recipient of the 2024 National Prize for Musical Arts, through the lens of Chile's two main state awards for music. It analyzes the National Prize for Art -established in 1942 within the context of academic hegemony- and the President of the Republic's Prize for National Music (created in 2000, recognizing musical diversity), an award Trujillo received in 2004. His training at the university conservatory and his professional development within mass media systems—radio, records, and television—illustrate the tension between these two projects. Faced with a scarcity of documentary sources, the study relies on the musician's autobiographical memory, addressing his conservatory experience, his perception of being "mistreated" by the academic establishment, his coherent ideological stance, and his conception of the musical craft. The text concludes by reflecting on the weakening of the institutional academic music project and the need to overcome false dichotomies between art and popular music, positioning Trujillo's figure as a case that evidences this historical contrast.
