This article provides a brief and descriptive overview of the history of jazz in Brazil, highlighting the main characters and aesthetic and cultural adjustments in the frame of their absorption by the Brazilian society, which occurred throughout the 20th century and early 21th century. Divided into four phases, the first period introduces the development of jazz as a popular song for dancing in clubs and societies, along with foreign and Brazilian genres, animated by jazz bands. The second, addresses the widespread jazz by technological innovations and absorbed by a segment of the urban elite, and generally run by musical groups in big band sets. The third phase is the moment when the Brazilian musicians mix local musics with jazz sound blending them in bossa nova and samba. And the fourth period, when Brazilian jazz is developed in a variety of concepts, which shall be recognized as Brazilian Instrumental Music.
