Women on the Andean border of Chile, Bolivia and Peru

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the cross-border mobility of women living on the Andean border from the Chilean side, specifically from the first three regions: Arica and Parinacota, the Tarapacá region and the Antofagasta region. We are interested in understanding how the mobility of women living in the border space has been functional to the development of regional economies insofar as these economies have benefited from the gender, ethnic and social asymmetries existing in these regions. To this end, we systematise the literature and the work carried out by various researchers on cross-border migration in the north of the country.

Author Biographies

Carolina Stefoni, Universidad de Tarapacá

Doctora en Sociología de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado (2013), Magíster en Estudios Culturales de la Universidad de Birmingham – Inglaterra (1999) y Socióloga de la Pontificia Universidad Católica (1996). Se desempeña como académica de la Universidad de Tarapacá y es investigadora asociada del Centro de Estudios de Conflicto y Cohesión Social (COES). Es actualmente la directora del Doctorado de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Tarapacá. Posee una larga trayectoria en estudios y publicaciones asociadas a las migraciones en Chile y América Latina.

Marcela Tapia, Universidad Arturo Prat

Profesora de Historia y Geografía. Doctora en Estudios de América Latina Contemporánea del Instituto Universitario de Investigación Ortega y Gasset y la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España. Directora ejecutiva del Instituto de Estudios Internacionales de la Universidad Arturo Prat. Sus temas de investigación son las migraciones internacionales, asuntos fronterizos y género.
